RAGSY SINGING IN WELSH IN PARTI PONTY
Ragsy, a talented local musicians, who earned a high profile after appearing on the program ‘The Voice’ sings Parti Ponty. A few months ago, he began a journey of learning Welsh and the commitment to learning has reached a new level since last week, as he said to us.
“Even though I have a very welsh accent (So I am told) I am not a welsh speaker. Being a very passionate Welsh man and with the guidance of good friends Tommo & Terwyn Davies I recently achieved one of my ambitions to perform a song of mine in Welsh with Cwmbach Male voice Choir. This has now sparked a new ambition and passion to learn the Welsh Language and thanks to Learn Welsh for adults team at Cardiff University I am now embarking on an intense course learning this beautiful language.”
Ragsy will sing in Welsh during Parti Ponty this Saturday in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd. He has been discussing and working with Menter Iaith Rhondda Cynon Taf in preparation to taking the bold step of performing parts of his songs in Welsh. Menter Iaith is delighted to showcase a performer with a passion for the language. In his own words,
“Every time I hear someone speaking Welsh, I feel a huge sense of pride that this beautiful, rhythmical, inquisitive and almost magical language is ours. This has always been followed closely by a sense of shame that I, as a proud Welshman, do not understand and cannot speak the language of my homeland.”
Ragsy will share the stage with several other performers including Amy Wadge, who’s also passionate about the country and its language and who wants to promote the benefits of learning Welsh to your children. We’re also delighted to welcome the great local band, Chroma and the king of the Welsh music scene, Geraint Jarman. As Ragsy prepares for the festival he said,
“Thanks to everyone at Menter Iaith I now have an opportunity to perform at Parti Ponty. I am excited to perform at the event and extremely nervous as this is a welsh language festival and obviously I am at the early stages of learning this language let alone performing. But the team have been very helpful and encouraging. I would be gratetful for any help and tips with my journey of learning my native tongue. Look forward to seeing you on the 15th July. Please be gentle!”
